CARLOS FEDERICO GUTKIN PRAST (b. 1960, Buenos Aires)
Education:In 1972 Gutkin began his musical studies and Classical guitar training at Esteban Salas Conservatory in Santiago de Cuba, where he was residing at the time. Afterward, he continued his studies in guitar at the National School of Music of Havana under Flores Chaviano, receiving the title of professor and guitarist in 1981.
The same year, Gutkin left Cuba for Lisbon, where he studied with Lopes e Silva and Piñeiro Nagy, after which he resumed his formal training at the Real Conservatório Superior de Música in Madrid, studying with Demetrio Ballesteros. It was here that he received his degree in Guitar Performance.
Gutkin has played in masterclasses of renowned masters such as Alirio Dias, Roberto Aussel, Leo Brouwer, Manuel Barrueco, Eduardo Isaac, and Alberto Ponce. Composition teachers have included Christopher Bochmann, José Carlos Buonacorso, Jorge Peixinho, and Enmanuel Nunes.
Compositional Output: Gutkin has written works for solo guitar, guitar and voice, guitar trio, choir, and electronic instruments, among others. Displaying interest in many musical opportunities, Gutkin has collaborated with his father, playwright Adolfo Gutkin, as a composer and guitarist. Notable collaborations include Dracula's Concert (1982), Gilgamesh (1983), the Gulbenkian Foundation commission A Procura do Presente (1987), A Criação (1992), and most recently, Fernando Arrabal's Guernica (2008).In 1999, Gutkin collaborated with Cornucopia Theater in Lisbon as a guitarist for The Marriage of Figaro, written by Portuguese composer João Madureira.Gutkin's Jardíns de Luz (2006), a solo guitar work was a finalist in the Luso-Hispanic Competition of Composition for Guitar in Badajoz, Spain.
Performances: Gutkin has given numerous concerts as both soloist and chamber musician throughout southern Europe and Cuba, participating in many festivals and events. In 1997, he formed the Duo Atlântico with flautist José Rui Fernandes, performing multiple concerts and festivals in Portugal and Spain highlighting music of Hispanic composers, culminating in the Cimeira Mundial do Tango de Lisboa festival in 1998. In 2000, Gutkin collaborated with the theater company Teatrova, contributing performance, composition and arrangements to Militango, an homage to Astor Piazzolla written and produced by Adolfo Gutkin. With the collaboration of soprano Ana Paula Russo, Gutkin has performed more than 30 duo concerts since 1996 with three different programs: "Recital of Christmas," portraying popular Christmas songs from many countries and African-American spirituals; "Recital of Hispanic Music," highlighting Latin-American composers and producing the 2005 CD "Melodia Sentimental"; and finally "Human Sins and Final Redemption." Gutkin's most recent CD, "Jardíns de Luz," was released in Novembre of 2008 with a variety of original compositions for solo guitar and guitar flute duo. Flautist José Rui Fernandes is featured on the album.
Teaching Experience: Between 1983 and 1984, Gutkin worked as professor of guitar in the youth music school "Juventude Musical Portuguesa" in Lisbon. Between 1987 and 1995, he taught Acoustics, Music History, Music Education and Guitar in IFICT, one of Lisbon's only integrational arts schools. Since 1994, he has worked as professor of guitar and director of guitar ensemble in Escola de Música Nossa Senhora do Cabo, in Linda á Velha, Portugal.
