Pedro Faria Gomes (1979 - )
Pedro Faria Gomes (b.1979, Lisbon) studied at the Academia de Música de Santa Cecília in Lisbon with Leonor Fernandes (piano) and João Madureira (composition). He graduated in composition at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa in 2001, studying with Eurico Carrapatoso and Christopher Bochmann. He was invited to lecture in analysis at the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa conservatoire (1999–2007) as well as in composition techniques and analysis at the Academia de Música de Santa Cecília and at the Piaget Institute of Almada. As a composer, Pedro Faria Gomes has received several commissions from a wide range of Portuguese ensembles and institutions such as the Teatro Nacional São João, Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa, Orquestra Clássica da Madeira, Academia de Música de Santa Cecília, RTP / Prémio Jovens Músicos, Academia de Música de Viana do Castelo and Coro de Câmara de Setúbal. Other notable performances have included: I Solisti Veneti with Claudio Scimone, Orquestra Nacional do Porto with Luís Carvalho, Sinfonietta de Lisboa and Coro Ricercare with Vasco Azevedo, Orquestra do Algarve with Cesário Costa, Coro de Câmara Lisboa Cantat with Jorge Alves, Orquestra do Norte with José Ferreira Lobo, Royal College of Music Symphony Orchestra with Patrick Bailey, Contemporary Consort with Tom Davey and Composers Ensemble with Richard Baker, across Europe and the world. These have taken place at such venues as the Teatro Nacional São João, Grande Auditório da Culturgest, Teatro Municipal São Luiz, Teatro Diogo Bernardes, Teatro Municipal Sá de Miranda, Teatro Micaelense, Fundação de Serralves, Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, Casa da Música, Escola de Música do Conservatório Nacional, Conservatoire Claude Debussy, National Portrait Gallery, Victoria and Albert Museum, Royal College of Music, Oxford Playhouse, Southbank Centre, King’s Lynn Festival and Stratford on Avon Festival. He won the Lopes-Graça Prize in Composition (Tomar) with the choral piece À Memória de Anarda in 2007. Recently, his music represented Portugal at the Expo 2008 in Zaragoza. Based in London since 2007, Pedro Faria Gomes has concluded a masters programme in composition at the Royal College of Music, studying with David Sawer, and is starting a doctoral programme at the same institution in September 2009. These studies have been supported with scholarships from both the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia and the Royal College of Music. He also won the PRS Sir Arthur Bliss Memorial award for 2007-8 and a Stanley Picker Trust award for 2008-9. His music has been released on CD by labels Compasso and Numérica.
