Pedro Oliveira Neves began his musical studies at age ten in the Aveiro Music Conservatory where he studied violoncello with Isabel Boiça. When he was thirteen he began studying conducting with António Oliveira Gomes and Amílcar Morais.

Pedro continued his cello studies with professor Paulo Gaio Lima at the National Orchestra Academy in Lisboa and in 1996 earned his undergraduate degree in cello performance.

In 1996 Pedro Neves received a scholarship from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation which enabled him to get his post-graduate degree at the Juan Pedro Carrero School of Music in Barcelona, Spain. There he studied cello with professor Marçal Cervera.

After returning from Spain, Pedro attended the National Ochestral Academy to study conducting with Jean-Marc Burfin. He received his conducting degree in 2005.

Pedro has performed in various festivals including the Portuguese Youth Orchestra, the Mediterranian Youth Ochestra and the Baden-Wuttenberg Orchestra. He has participated in  cello masterclasses with professors Maria de Macedo, Paulo Gaio Lima, Daniel Grosgurin, Marçal Cervera and Anner Bylsma.

Pedro has also studied orchestral conducting with Alexander Polishchuk and Emílio Pomàrico. In September of 2006, Pedro was the assistant to German conductor, Michael Zilm, for a youth festival dedicated to Stravinksy’s Rite of Spring.

Pedro Neves has received awards from the “Portuguese Youth Prize” and the “Young Musicians’ Competition” of Portugal.

He has conducted numerous orchestras, including the Metropolitan Orchestra and the Metropolitan Academy Orchestra of Lisbon, the Beiras Philharmonic Orchestra, and the National Tejo Orchestra.

Pedro currently teaches cello at the National Music Academy and the National Orchestra Academy of Lisbon. He is the Artistic Director of the Arts and Music Society of Travassô and the principal conductor of both the Esproarte Symphony Orchestra and the Espinho Classical Orchestra.
