Totus Tuus / Pater Noster – I composed these two pieces for the Chamber Choir of the University of Lisbon, expressly for a concert in honor of Aristides de Sousa Mendes. They should, if possible, be sung together. The language in both the pieces is simple, with the influence of Orthodox chant from the Russian Church. If they are sung together, the pair should begin with Totus Tuus. Completed in 2005, this short choral piece was composed on an original text by Saint Louis-Marie Grignion de Montfort, from which John Paul II extracted the motto for his Pontificate. Its atmosphere is one of contemplation and serenity, set in a totally homophonic texture. The Pater Noster is, by contrast, incisively rhythmic, nearly psalmody.
