Miguel Resende Bastos

Born in the city of Porto, Portugal, on the 7th of April 1995, Miguel Resende Bastos started studying music at 4 years of age. He received basic educaCon in Piano and Secondary EducaCon in Transverse Flute. He also studied saxophone for a few years. While he was studying Sciences and Technologies in Portuguese Secondary School, he started having Analysis and ComposiCon Techniques classes with Daniel Moreira, at the Cme a young and already prolific Portuguese composer. It was in these classes that he decided that he wanted to become a composer. Three years later, he started his Bachelor studies in ComposiCon at ESMAE|IPP (Superior School for Music and Performing Arts, in Porto) where he studied ComposiCon with Dimitris Andrikopoulos.

Here he also studied orchestraCon, conducCng and electronic music with composers such as Daniel Moreira, Carlos Guedes, Carlos Azevedo, and Eugénio Amorim. He also had private lessons in conducCng with Maestro Artur Pinho Maria. During this period, he had the opportunity to meet and have seminars with composers such as Cândido Lima, Luca Francesconi, Unsuk Chin, Helmut Lachenmann, Nicolas Bacri, and Vic Hoyland. As part of the ERASMUS+ program, Miguel studied for a year at the Janácek Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, Czech Republic, where he learned ComposiCon from Ivo Medek. There he also studied InteracCve Electronic Music with Jan Kavan, and Choral and Orchestral ConducCng with Gabriel Rovnák. During this period, he met and had seminars with composers such as Frederic Rzewski, MarCjn Padding, Kees Tazelaar, and Krysztof Knibel. He took part in the 2016-17 ediCon of the Tenso Young Composers Workshop in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and Mechelen, Belgium, led by composers James Woods and Leo Samama. His piece “À toa” won 1st prize at the 10th InternaConal ComposiCon CompeCCon of Póvoa de Varzim. Currently, he is studying ComposiCon with composer Robin de Raaff, as a Master’s Degree student at Codarts - University of the Arts, in Roberdam, Netherlands. He has a special interest in cinema and sings at Coral de Letras da Universidade do Porto, a Portuguese choir led by Maestro José Luís Borges Coelho.
