António Teixeira (1707-1759?)

Antonio Teixeira (1707-1753) was born in Lisbon; was the first pensioner that King D. João V, the Magnanimous, sent to Italy in order to improve his skills, among the great masters who lived there; He had, then, just ten years old, proof that he expressed its great qualities very early; acquired technique and won dilated fame; He drew a lot of sacred music, like  Te Deum to twenty voices and another one to nine voices with orchestral accompaniment; also wrote cantatas and operas, we can point out among them all his "Guerra do Alecrim e da Manjerona" about the literary text  of António José da Silva, known as The Jew.

He managed to harmonize the complexity of the Roman style, lightness of the Italian of taste and refinement baroque’s criteria; produced much sacred music; the Miserere psalm is a precious piece of the Portuguese musical treasure; Was organist and chapel master in Lisbon; his name is one of the most prestigious of the time; He wrote the score of various operas, the most famous being the one that received the title of La Spinalba.
