Paulo Bastos (1967- )

Paulo Bastos was born in Vila Pouca de Aguiar in 1967. He began his musical education at Escola de Música do Porto with Hélia Soveral. He got his Composition Diploma at Escola Superior de Música e Artes do Espectáculo and he was awarded the “Prize for Best Student” by Instituto Politécnico do Porto in 1994. He’s Master of Music by Universidade de Aveiro. 

Paulo Bastos is professor at Conservatório de Música Calouste Gulbenkian de Braga, since 2000/2001. He teaches the only undergraduate Composition Diploma, to which he elaborated the syllabus approved by the Ministry of Education.

He attended several workshops with The Strasbourg Percussions, Sharon Kanach, Miguel Ribeiro Pereira, Johannes Kalitzke, Dieter Schnebel, Stefano Scodanibbio, Gerhard Stäbler, Jorge Peixinho, Toshio Hosokawa, Nicolaus A. Huber, Kunsu Shim, Amnon Wolman, Manbang Yi, Virgilio Melo and Ken Valitsky. 

His works had been performed in Portugal, Germany and Austria. Amongst them: Mokuso (Sextet Version) at 18ºs Encontros de Música Contemporânea da Gulbenkian in 1994; electronic music for the installation “... Abdica“ at Exposição Colectiva – “Objecto Luz” – at Museu do Carro Eléctrico in Oporto and Museu da Electricidade in Lisbon; ab origine (for Piano) at 3ªs Jornadas de Arte Contemporânea in Oporto in May 1996; Arsis (Basson) at the international bassoon meeting at Karlsruhe and Frankfurt (Germany) and Vienna (Austria) in January 1997; 33.4 (Electronic) at “in_bloc” in December 2001; Arsis (Bassoon) and Ossia II (Flute) at Igreja de S. Frutuoso in Braga in April 2004; Ultima Ratio (Orchestra) at Jornadas Europeias do Património, in Pedras Salgadas, performed by Jovem Orquestra do Porto in September 2005. 

Paulo Bastos composed music for the project Foguetão 2001, published in CD-Rom by Porto Editora in 1999.

He presented a cycle of conferences intitled “Basic Elements in Musical Creation” at Biblioteca Municipal de Barcelos, between December 2000 and January 2001. In January 2008 Paulo Bastos presented a conference intituled “The theory of attractive tones – methodological elements and analytical appliance in Six Pieces , Op. 19 by Arnold Schoenberg” at Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.

In May 2006, the magazine of Associação Portuguesa de Educação Musical published his Peça Infantil nº 3 for piano. Paulo Bastos’ 17 Pieces for Guitar were published by Centro de Estudos da Criança da Universidade do Minho in December 2006.
