Álvaro Cassuto (1938 - )
Álvaro Cassuto is Portugal’s foremost conductor.
During his career, he was Music Director of the Portuguese National Radio Symphony Orchestra, the University of California Symphony Orchestra at Irvine, the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the National Orchestra of New York, the Nova Filarmonia Portuguesa, the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Raanana Symphony Orchestra, the Algarve Orchestra and of the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra.
Born in Porto in 1938, he studied in Lisbon and in Berlin and obtained a degree in Conducting from the Vienna Conservatory, one year after graduating in Law from the University of Lisbon.
He initiated his career as a composer, and his works have met with international acclaim. He was the recipient of numerous commissions from Portuguese as well as foreign musical institutions, mainly of the United States.
He has been a frequent guest of some the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, and dozens of others across the world.
He recorded 25 CDs with the Nova Filarmonia Portuguesa alone and a series for NAXOS dedicated to some of Portugal’s most important composers, including the complete symphonies of Joly Braga Santos and of Luís de Freitas Branco which have met with the most enthusiastic international critical acclaim.
