Luís Pipa was born in 1960 in Figueira da Foz, Portugal. He studied at the Conservatoires of Braga and Porto, the Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts of Vienna and the British Universities of Reading and Leeds, where he was awarded the degrees of Master of Music in Performance Studies and PhD in Performance, respectively.
His piano masters were Maria Teresa Xavier, Helena Sá e Costa, Noel Flores and Laura O’ Gorman, but he also came in contact with figures such as Sequeira Costa, Jörg Demus and Marian Ribicky.
He has composed works for solo piano, including children´s pieces, chamber music and songs. As a pianist, his repertoire extends from the baroque to the twentieth century, having given premières of works by Christopher Bochmann, João-Heitor Rigaud and Luiz Costa. His numerous recordings include works by Bach, Scarlatti, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Debussy and other acclaimed composers, together with Portuguese music and some of his own compositions.
He is Professor of piano and chamber music at the University of Minho, Portugal. He is regularly invited to give piano master classes in Portugal and abroad.
