Clotilde Rosa, daughter of the musicians José Rosa and Branca Belo Carvalho Rosa, was born in Lisbon in 1930. The interest in the music environment began very soon and started her piano studies privately, and then completed the Course of Piano and Harp at the National Conservatory, studied with Ivone Santos and Cecilia Borba. It would be the harp instrument that she would focus professionally, having resumed her studies with Macario Santiago Kastner thoroughbass and early music interpretation. During this period, she integrated the Minstrels of Lisbon. Between 1960 and 1963, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and the Dutch government awarded her with scholarships to study harp privately with Phia Berghout, Jacqueline Borot, Hans Zingel, in Netherlands, in Paris and Cologne, Germany.
On a proposal by Mario Falcão, played Imagens Sonoras by Jorge Peixinho, which have caused the approach of Clotilde Rosa to this composer and Portuguese music vanguard. Equally decisive for the future of her career as a composer, were the courses in Darmstadt from 1963. Participated in the group gathered by Jorge Peixinho who came to lead in 1970 to the Contemporary Music Group of Lisbon. However, she continued to be interested in the interpretation of early music, and composed with Carlos Franco and Luísa de Vasconcelos the Antiqua Trio.
As an instrumentalist, she was also in the National Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of the National Radio and collaborated with the orchestras of the S. Carlos National Theatre and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. From 1987 to 1989 she taught Analysis and Composition Techniques at the School of Music of the National Conservatory of Lisbon, moving for the harp class of 1989 to 2000. It was at this time that was introduced, by Clotilde Rosa and for the first time in Portugal, contemporary music in the course of harp program.
Among its activities, it has also integrated the Comissão Sectorial da Música Erudita da Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores. It was in 1974, at the invitation of Jorge Peixinho, that she outlined her first piece of music, at the collective work In-con-sub-sequência. She assumed herself as a composer in 1976 with the work Encontro.
Brought to the Paris International Composers Tribune by Joly Braga Santos and Nuno Barreiros, a proposal by Jorge Peixinho, the piece has been recorded in the RDP and reached the 10th place ex-aequo between 60 works from 30 countries. She also won the 1st prize in the National Competition Musical Workshop Composition of Porto with Variantes I, for flute solo. Despite her appetite for sonic experimentalism, examples of which are As quatro estações do ano and Projecto-collage, she never worked in an electroacoustic music studio, and her work mainly for voice or acoustic instruments.
